How to measure whether ChatGPT and AI tools recommend your business

The short answer

Measure AI visibility in two ways. First, test a fixed set of the questions your clients ask across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google every month, and record whether you are named, how you are described and who is named instead. Second, track visits and enquiries arriving from AI tools in Google Analytics 4, where they appear as referrals from sites such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai.

AI visibility is new, and the tools to measure it are still young. That is no reason to guess. With a simple, consistent method, you can see whether your work is making a difference.

Why is AI visibility hard to measure?

  • Answers vary from person to person and day to day.
  • There is no "position one" to track, only whether you are mentioned.
  • Many people read the answer and never click.

So the aim is to measure the trend across many questions, not to chase a single screenshot.

Method 1: a monthly prompt test

  1. Write a fixed set of questionsTen to twenty questions your clients actually ask, such as "Which accountant in Leeds is good for contractors?"
  2. Test across toolsChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, in a private window.
  3. Record the same things each timeNamed or not, how you were described, who was named instead, which sources were cited.
  4. Repeat monthlySame questions, same day each month, so you see the trend.

Method 2: AI referral traffic in GA4

When people click through from AI tools, they arrive as referrals. In Google Analytics 4, look at traffic acquisition by session source and filter for sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Links from ChatGPT often carry utm_source=chatgpt.com, which makes them easy to spot. Then mark those sources as a channel group and track enquiries from them.

Method 3: ask people

Add "ChatGPT or another AI tool" to the "How did you hear about us?" question on your forms and calls. Many AI-driven enquiries arrive later by search or phone, so asking catches what analytics misses.

Questions

Questions, answered.

How do I know if ChatGPT recommends my business?

Test a fixed set of client questions every month and record whether you are named, how you are described and who is named instead.

Can I see ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics?

Yes. Visits from ChatGPT appear as referrals, often with utm_source=chatgpt.com, in GA4 traffic acquisition reports.

Are there tools that track AI visibility?

Yes, several tools now track brand mentions across AI tools. A consistent monthly manual test is a good place to start.

Why do AI answers change so much?

AI tools generate answers fresh each time and personalise them, so measure the trend over many questions, not one result.
