Performance Max vs Search campaigns: which is better for service businesses?
The short answer
For most service businesses, Search campaigns should come first, because they show your ads to people actively searching for your service and give you full control over the searches you pay for. Performance Max can add extra enquiries across YouTube, Maps, Gmail and display, but it needs accurate conversion tracking, good creative and enough data to work well.
Google pushes Performance Max hard. For an online shop with thousands of products and plenty of sales data, it can be excellent. For a solicitor, accountant or plumber who needs qualified enquiries, the answer is less simple. Here is how the two compare and how I decide.
What is the difference between Performance Max and Search?
A Search campaign shows text ads on Google when people search for the keywords you choose. You see the searches, you choose the bids and you control where the money goes. Performance Max is a single campaign that uses Google's automation to show ads across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps. You give it a goal, a budget, images, videos and text, and Google decides where to show what.
| Search campaigns | Performance Max | |
|---|---|---|
| Where ads show | Google search results | Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps |
| Control over searches | Full: keywords and negative keywords | Limited: Google chooses, guided by your settings |
| What you need | Keywords, ads and a landing page | Images, videos, text, audience signals and solid tracking |
| Reporting | Detailed, down to each search | Improving, but less detailed |
| Best for | People searching for your service now | Extra reach once tracking and data are in place |
Why Search usually comes first for service businesses
Someone searching "conveyancing solicitor Birmingham" has already decided what they need. Search campaigns put you in front of exactly that person, and the search terms report shows you every phrase you paid for, so you can cut the ones that waste money. For businesses where each client is worth hundreds or thousands of pounds, that control is worth a lot.
When Performance Max makes sense
- Your conversion tracking is accurate, and ideally tells Google which leads became clients.
- You already have a Search campaign producing steady enquiries.
- You have good images and at least one short video.
- You serve an area with enough people for YouTube, Maps and display to matter.
- You can give it a few weeks and enough budget to learn.
Without those, Performance Max tends to find the cheapest conversions it can, which for a lead generation business can mean form fills from people who were never going to buy.
How we set up Performance Max for lead generation
- Feed it real outcomesImport which leads became qualified or became clients, so Google optimises for those rather than any form fill.
- Exclude your brandStop it taking credit for people who were already searching for your business name.
- Add negative keywordsBlock the searches you would never want, as you would in a Search campaign.
- Use your own creativeReal photos and a simple video of your team outperform generic stock images.
- Judge it on cost per clientCompare it with your Search campaigns on qualified leads and clients, not on cost per lead alone.
