How much does Google PPC cost for a small business in the UK?

The short answer

Most UK small and medium businesses spend £1,000 to £5,000 a month on Google Ads. Clicks on the searches that bring service businesses their clients cost roughly £4 to £50 each, depending on the sector. The number that matters is cost per lead, which typically runs from £15 for dental and trades enquiries to £150 for financial advice.

Google Ads is one of the fastest ways for a UK service business to win new enquiries. You can launch on Monday and take calls by Wednesday. But the first question every business owner asks is the same: what is this going to cost? The honest answer depends on your sector, your area and how competitive your market is. There are clear benchmarks, though, and they make planning much easier.

What does a UK small business spend on Google Ads?

Most UK small and medium businesses that are serious about generating leads spend between £1,000 and £5,000 a month on Google Ads. Some spend less to test a single service in one town; some spend far more. You set the budget, you can change it at any time, and you only pay when someone clicks.

What does a click cost in your sector?

Cost per click varies enormously by sector, because it is set by an auction between the businesses bidding on the same searches. These are average UK costs per click for the searches that bring service businesses their clients, alongside the cost per lead we typically see in our own campaigns.

SectorExample searchesCost per clickTypical cost per lead
Dental practicesdentist near me, dental implants£4 to £11£15 to £45
Trades and home servicesboiler repair, emergency plumber£8 to £17£15 to £50
Accountantsaccountant near me, contractor accountant£7 to £50£30 to £80
Solicitorsconveyancing, divorce solicitor£4 to £26£40 to £120

What makes Google Ads cost more or less?

Four things drive what you pay for each click and each lead.

  1. CompetitionThe more businesses bidding on the same searches, the higher the price. National law firms and comparison sites push up prices for legal and financial searches.
  2. LocationTargeting central London usually costs more than targeting a market town, because more businesses compete for the same people.
  3. Search intentSearches from people ready to buy, such as "emergency plumber near me", cost more than research searches, such as "how to bleed a radiator". They are also worth far more.
  4. Quality ScoreGoogle rewards relevant ads and good landing pages with lower prices. A well-built account often pays less per click than a competitor bidding more.

Why cost per lead matters more than cost per click

A cheap click is not a cheap lead. A £10 click that turns into an enquiry one time in ten gives you a £100 lead. A £3 click that converts one time in fifty gives you a £150 lead. The expensive click was the better buy. That is why we build and judge every campaign on cost per qualified lead, and ideally on cost per client, rather than on clicks.

How do you know if Google Ads is working?

Compare what you spend with the revenue it brings in. If you spend £2,000 a month and win £20,000 of new work, your campaigns are working. If you spend £2,000 and cannot point to a single new client, something is broken, and it is usually the tracking, the landing page or the follow-up rather than the ads themselves.

To know for sure, track every call and form back to the campaign and search that produced it, and mark each enquiry in your CRM when it becomes a client. Then you can see your true cost per client by campaign.

Where should a small business start?

  • Start with your most valuable service in your core area, not everything everywhere.
  • Send clicks to a page about that service, not your homepage.
  • Set up call and form tracking before you spend anything.
  • Reply to every enquiry within minutes, by email and text if you cannot call straight away.
  • Review search terms weekly and block the ones that bring the wrong people.

A tightly focused campaign with a clear landing page and fast follow-up will outperform a broad, unfocused one almost every time. Once it is producing enquiries at a cost you are happy with, expand to the next service or area.

Questions

Questions, answered.

How much does Google Ads cost for a small business in the UK?

Most UK small and medium businesses spend £1,000 to £5,000 a month. Clicks on the searches that bring service businesses their clients cost roughly £4 to £50 each, depending on the sector.

What is a good cost per lead from Google Ads?

It depends on the sector. In our campaigns, typical ranges are £15 to £45 for dental practices, £15 to £50 for trades, £30 to £80 for accountants, £40 to £120 for solicitors and £60 to £150 for financial advisers.

Can I run Google Ads with a small budget?

Yes, if you keep it focused: one service, one area, one landing page and good tracking. A small budget spread across many services rarely produces enough data to improve.

How quickly does Google Ads produce leads?

Campaigns can produce enquiries within days of launch. Most accounts need a few weeks of testing and refinement to bring cost per lead down to a steady level.
